In this church, everyone held on to Ben, afraid he might go up to the altar and help himself to some of that gold. This is the Golden Altar that Jesuit monks covered with mud so that English pirate Henry Morgan wouldn't pillage it. The pirates sacked and burned "Old Panama," but left the "worthless" altar. Afterwards, the monks moved the altar to this new church in Casco Viejo.
